Not only do we serve the best quality food and drinks to our customers we always prepare and store our food in a spotless environment. We are super proud of all of our team for keeping and working to such a high standard and continuing to achieve our 5 star rating.

The Base Story

Dive into the story of The Base, how it all began . . .

To celebrate World Book Day 2024 we have decided to do something a little different an write our own story the story of how The Base came to be.

Chapter One - Where It All Began

The Base started as an idea over a coffee one Sunday morning in the early months of 2019. Was it going to become a reality? At this point it was unclear but the dream was ignited and we knew it was something that could become a success not just for ourselves but for other local small businesses in Derby to thrive and support each other. Plans for the Base took off in the latter months of 2019 with encouragement from our friends and family. We took the leap of faith, and at this point, it was just the two of us and our accountant but we believed in it from the start. envisioned a well-being hub with a coffee bar at the heart of the building for all our visitors to enjoy and relax.

Chapter Two - Creating The Brand

After deciding on the name we knew we needed a strong & distinctive logo and with the help of a local designer, the triangle was born. The Base of the triangle is our strong foundations and the tip of the triangle is the summit and our aim to be the best we can be.

Chapter Three - Getting The Keys

Deciding on the location was tricky, we had a lot of boxes to tick and there was very little freehold commercial property available. When this came on the market we knew it was meant to be! The space was amazing, with so much potential, lots of car parking and in a great location. We finally got the keys in July 2020 and celebrated with a bottle of fizz. Works started very next day.

Chapter Four - The Big Base Build

Things were a bit crazy after COVID and we were travelling all over just to get bags of plaster and building materials. It was a huge challenge to get the building ready but with our passion, strong will to succeed, many long hours and after hard work we made it happen. The Base doors finally opened in September 2020 and we celebrated with some of the new businesses in the building, and The Base Bar was born!

Chapter Five - The Base Bar

The Base Bar started with a small but dedicated team of two, a coffee machine and a few locally made brownies & tray bakes. Today we have grown to a talented team of 10, passionate about delivering exceptional quality in all areas of our business. We have elevated our menu, designed our own app, partnered with Delivery providers, created exceptional buffets and so much more.

Chapter Six - Our Growth

Over the past three years, The Base has seen huge changes and growth. We have a great group of small businesses working here, we have private and corporate clients hiring our studios and bar area and we have established a firm footing for the future. We are supporting local charities, trusts and professional sports persons, sourcing many of our products for The Base Bar from small local businesses as well.

Chapter Seven - Challenges

However, this hasn't come to be without its challenges some of which we still face day-to-day. For us, COVID was a big challenge being a new business and not being eligible for support but we are determined and adapted to the circumstances. Recently we have been faced with a huge increase in running costs, a challenge many businesses have and continue to face.

Chapter Eight - The Future

Our future goals and plans are to continue to have a building where every business thrives and people support and celebrate each other’s successes. For The Base Bar to continue to grow our brand and reputation for being the best provider of quality coffee, treats and nutritious house-cooked food. To keep putting The Base Bar and The Base on the map as an exceptional and unique venue.

The End For Now

We can’t thank all of our wonderful customers enough for supporting us and our journey and we are so lucky to have such amazing people enjoying the space we built up three years on! Every coffee break spent with us, delivery order placed, buffet, hire, like, share, comment and review means so much to all of The Base Bar team. As well as supporting the businesses that work under The Base roof. Thank you!

Introducing our Spring Specials menu

We have had so much fun creating these specials we wanted to incorporate fresh ingredients and colour into them as well as indulgence, with lots of ideas brought to the table, we narrowed it down to:

So what's on the menu?
Big Base Breakfast Wrap with BBQ Baked Beans - Two rashers of crispy smoked back bacon, one thick pork sausage, two hash browns and a two-egg omelette in a wrap served with BBQ baked beans.

Tuna Nicoise Salad - Tuna flakes, baby potatoes, boiled eggs,
olives, sundried tomatoes, green beans, cucumber, with rocket, seeds and served with balsamic glaze.

Beetroot Hummus and Feta Salad Bowl - House-made beetroot hummus, feta cubes, olives, tomatoes, cucumber, beetroot cubes, spring onion and sweetcorn on a bed of quinoa and rocket.

Vegan Beetroot Hummus Salad Bowl - House-made beetroot hummus, roasted butternut squash, roasted red onion, croutons, tomatoes, cucumber and mixed leaves topped with seeds.

Our paper bags no longer have our custom stickers on them, we swapped them out for our brilliant stamp and now we are doing the same with our coffee cups ☕️

Although it is something small it’s another way we can create less waste and become more sustainable. You will still find our stickers on some of our items but cutting back is our main priority!

Get to know the owners of The Base Bar Derby

We love getting to know you guys at the base bar so we thought for any of you who don't know us we’d like to introduce ourselves!

A little bit about us . . .
A little bit about us, we are Karen and Kenny we have a passion for good coffee, quality food and keeping fit.

This led us to open The Base Bar in September 2020. What started with just a coffee machine has turned into a busy and thriving business. We couldn't have done this without our brilliant team and loyal customers.

We are hands on and you will find us in The Base Bar most days making sure everyone has a great experience. Kenny works in construction but helps out on weekends and for events.

It's long days and hard work but we couldn't be prouder of the progress we have made these past few years. We aim to be the best independent coffee and food hub in Derby and we have some exciting plans for 2024.

Thank you for supporting our small business, we love meeting our customers and look forward to seeing you in the new year.

The Base Bar Turns 3 Today!

We started making our buffets for local businesses earlier this year and they have become increasingly popular.

Where we started

We’ve come a long way from the day we opened The Base Bar doors 3 years ago today. Starting as a little coffee and cake bar to what we are now is something way beyond we ever thought possible!

We never imagined we’d have a whole team working so hard Monday - Saturday serving up delicious food, high quality hot drinks, a variety of sweet treats, grab & go specials and not to mention our incredible Base Bar Buffets!

The Best Freshly Made Buffets In Derby

We started making our buffets for local businesses earlier this year and they have become increasingly popular.

Why are our buffets so good?

We cater each buffet around our client, whether it’s for a small private event or a large corporate lunch! So whatever you’re after we try our best to make it happen.

Which types of buffets do we do?

We do Breakfast Buffets including bagels with bacon, sausages and veggie options, Biscoff overnight oats and house-made nutty granola pots.

Base Buffets with deep filled wraps of various fillings, kettle crisps and brownie bites.

Baked Buffets including hot jacket potatoes with a mixture of toppings or our house-made dishes such as beef chilli con carne, chicken curry or pork meatballs all served with fluffy rice.

But is doesn't end there we have a list of extras you can add to your buffets to make them just right: cold drinks, salad bowls, pasta salads, house-made sausage rolls (a firm favourite) protein balls and brownie bites.

Phase one of our Base Bar refresh has begun this week

This is just the start of our journey to transform the Base Bar into the perfect place for everyone to enjoy!

What have we updated?

We firstly have added more seating so we can see more of you lovely lot enjoying our delicious food and drinks at one time! The more we grow as a business the more assessable we want it to be for more people and this was a main focus in our transformation journey.

We have updated the counter area to optimise the space we already had and make it work better for our team by adding shelving, more counter space and getting a brand new fridge! Also our favourite bit is the new panelling and baskets we have added to the front of our counter tying it into the feature wall and creating the prefect space for our crisps and snack selection.

We have also expanded our Grab & Go fridge space to give us more room for our delicious meals on the go, beverages and alcohol selection. Our new sugar and sweet station on top of our new bin and notice board has been a hit with you take out coffee lovers too! ..........!.

We will be closing the base bar on Saturday mornings for a well-deserved summer break!

Why are we closing on Saturdays?

We have made the decision to close on Saturdays over the summer due to our team needed some time off at the weekend to enjoy the sunshine! We appreciate all of your continued support as always.

STUDIO 3 - Currently used as a spin studio for 20 people.

Alongside the indulgent dirty treats at The Base Bar, from our gooey brownies to chocolatey traybakes and giant cookies, we also have a huge selection of refined sugar-free clean treats that are just as yummy and packed full of nutrients!

What are clean treats?

Our clean treats are created by the amazing Gail ( GailsGrub ). She makes fresh clean treats every week and no week is the same, each with different flavour combinations such as Biscoff, snickers, lemon drizzle, strawberries and cream, cappuccino, chocolate fudge (the list goes on) to tackle the sweet tooth! We have protein balls, slices, cups and rocky roads on our counter that can be enjoyed as a healthier alternative. With 250-300 calories and 9 grams of protein per treat, they really are the perfect snack or dessert.

What makes them better for you?
Our clean treats are made in-house, with natural ingredients including nuts, seeds, and oats and the sweetness we love comes from coconut sugar, dates and maple syrup. They are then topped with chocolate and spreads to give them that little bit of indulgence! You can be sure you're getting the delicious taste you crave from sweet treats with the best ingredients.

We have hit an incredible milestone this month!

Starting up in 2020 when the world entered a new normal was a task in itself but we believed we had something special, so we took the leap of faith and The Base began, home to The Base Bar (our pride and joy) from then to now we have achieved so much to be proud of!

What is The Base Bar?

We wanted to create a hub for everyone to enjoy, the ones who enjoy catch-ups over great coffee (coffee is our passion if you can’t tell) the fitness fanatics who want to grab a tasty snack after a class or PT session, PHYSIO/SPORTS MASSAGE/ FACIAL the ones who want a place to work in peace accompanied by delicious food, but most importantly for anyone and everyone who wants a place to escape. The Base Bar is so many things to so many people and that’s what we love so much about it!

Why has May 2023 been such a special month for us?
This month we have grown and hit a new milestone we now have 2,000 of you lovely lot following our day-to-day journey on Instagram!!! We could not be happier, it may seem small to some but to us, this is exactly what keeps us going, and we'd like to thank every person who follows, likes, shares and comes in to visit us. You guys are what keeps us being able to do what we love every day! We appreciate every single one of you and we are over the moon that we've grown this much from where we began through your support!

We have had an app transformation!

We are super excited for you guys to enjoy our updated app, if you haven’t downloaded it yet what are you waiting for?

What has changed?

We gave our app a refresh but don't worry everything is still where it used to be! We took some inspiration from our brilliant new website and wanted our app to be a true representation of The Base Bar. So we switched out the colours to our beautiful black, green and beige combo, gave it a new font, updated our photos and played around with our icons.

Simple right!

Yes, that's right we now offer large takeaway cups so you can enjoy your coffee super-sized. After chatting with you guys we noticed a lot of you wanted more of our delicious coffee and hot drinks to takeaway, so you can now go larger for just an extra £1 problem solved!

Why is our coffee so good?

We serve a full coffee menu from our Astoria commercial espresso machine. Our roasted coffee beans from Peru provide a full-bodied coffee that is gentle on the palate, with low acidity and a hint of sweetness.
